NHS Lewisham and University Hospital Lewisham are launching a new direct access service for expectant mothers or women who think they may be pregnant. Women in Deptford and New Cross now have the choice of getting in touch directly with their community midwife without seeing their GP first when they find out they are pregnant.
The service, launched on 1st April 2009, will mean women will now be able to see a midwife at the Waldron Health Centre, Stanley Street SE8 4BG, every Tuesday from 12 noon to 3pm or they can call 07554 115649 to arrange an appointment to see a midwife at a time that suits them.
These changes come as a result of consultation with pregnant women and new parents in Lewisham. Last year, NHS Lewisham asked these individuals how they would like their maternity care arranged and the majority said they would prefer to go straight to a midwife.
