Ultrasound scans use sound waves to build up a picture of the inside of the body. The ultrasound scanner has a small hand-held transducer (probe) which gives off sound waves. The transducer is passed over your body. The sound waves bounce off the organs inside your body, and are picked up again as they bounce back. The soundwaves are converted into an image on a monitor.
No ionising radiation is used in ultrasound.
You will be required to lay on an examination couch, gel will be put directly on the skin over the area of interest to allow the sound waves to transmit easily. The sonographer will move the hand-held probe over the part of your body that is being scanned. The scan image will appear on the screen, which will be next to you. If you would like to see it, just ask. Ultrasound scans are quite difficult to interpret.
If you are having a pelvic scan you may be asked to attend with a full bladder. Some pelvic scans for females are performed trans vaginally (TV scan). The probe is placed in the vagina and images obtained of the uterus and ovaries. For certain conditions this is the best way to visualise these organs. Most women find this more comfortable than having a scan with a full bladder.
Ultrasound scans take from 5 minutes to about half an hour, depending on the scan. At the end of the scan, you will be given tissue to remove the gel.
The sonographer will then report on the images obtained and you will be provided with a copy of the report.
If you have self referred for this scan it is your responsibility to act on the report and seek medical advice if this is recommended.
Scans take place at University Hospital Lewisham, which is within easy reach of Central London and Bromley. The nearest stations are Lewisham Docklands Light Railway and Ladywell train station. Pay and display car parking is available. See travel information for further details.

We will look at the abdominal aorta for evidence of aneurysm.
Approximately 1 in 20 people in the UK (over the age of 65) will develop an aortic aneurysm and it is more common in men than women. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body and an aneurysm occurs when the wall weakens and a bulge occurs (an aneurysm). This area is weakened and can rupture often resulting in death.
