Cancer Services

Lewisham Hospital provides specialised cancer diagnosis, treatment and care, and forms part of the South East London Cancer Network.

Together with the South East London Cancer Network we are developing pathways to improve cancer waiting times and services.  All members of the network work closely together to ensure that suspected cancers are investigated promptly and suitable courses of treatment are pursued. The cancer services team works closely with colleagues in other disciplines throughout the Trust to deliver patient-centred care.

The Cancer Services provided at UHL are:

  • Breast
  • Lung
  • Colorectal
  • Upper GI
  • Gynaecological
  • Head and Neck
  • Haemato-Oncology
  • Dermatology

Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust and King’s College Hospital also joined forces in 2008 to support a major Government bowel cancer screening programme aimed at saving thousands of lives.

The Trust also provides a community head and neck team, to provide specialist advice, support and rehabilitation for people who have head and neck cancer.

Breast Cancer Services

The Breast service is provided seamlessly by the Breast Unit Team from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust (GSTFT) on the UHL site.

The women of Lewisham - including health professionals and members of the public - have come together to share their experiences of breast cancer, and raise awareness of the importance of screening, and you can watch the films about them here.

Rare Tumours

Complex surgery for rare tumour types such as Upper GI, Gynaecology and Hepatobiliary is provided as required by Improvements in Outcome Guidance (IOG) at designated sites across the South East London Cancer Network (SELCN) e.g. GSTFT and King’s College Hospital.

Chemotherapy

University Hospital Lewisham provides BCSH Level 2 Chemotherapy services and is 100% compliant with standards for delivering Intrathecal Chemotherapy.  The Key Tumour types treated are Haemato-Oncology, Colorectal and Lung.

With the relocation of the new expanded Chemotherapy unit in the David Whitmore the capacity for delivering chemotherapy has increased.  This will enable more chemotherapy to be delivered locally and the patient experience to be improved.

Palliative Care

Uniquely Acute and Community Palliative Care are provided through UHL, ensuring that patients are made as comfortable as possible and that their pain is managed appropriately. We also work to support their families and loved ones.
