Delivering Specialist Radiology Services in Lewisham
We are continually improving our radiology services at
Lewisham Hospital, and are now able to accurately measure bone
density using our brand new state-of-the-art DEXA
scanner.
DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorbtiometry) scans are most
commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis (where the bones become weak
and fragile and more likely to break). They can also be used to
assess the risk of osteoporosis developing.
A DEXA bone scan can also help detect other bone-related
conditions, such as osteopenia (very low bone mineral density) and
osteomalacia (softening of the bones caused by a vitamin D
deficiency).
Our new DEXA scanning service enables us provide care
closer to home for patients who would previously have had to travel
out Lewisham. It also means patients have to wait less time to have
the scans they need, and diagnoses can be made much quicker.
Gwen Carman was one of the first patients to use the DEXA
scanner, and said: “The new facilities are great, and I was seen
really quickly by a lovely radiographer. It is also a lot more
convenient for me to be scanned in Lewisham rather than having to
travel further afield.”
If you would like to have your DEXA scan at Lewisham
Hospital rather than travelling outside of the borough, please
speak to your GP.
